For Isaiah Cumberbatch, safety isn’t simply a policy; it’s a mindset that carries through every part of his workday. As a Package Driver at Nippon Sanso Matheson’s Orlando, Florida hub, Isaiah brings more than a decade of customer service and management experience to his role, along with a strong commitment to serving customers safely and professionally. After working in over-the-road (OTR) driving, he was looking for an opportunity that would allow him to be home every day. When he interviewed with Nippon Sanso Matheson, he found more than he expected.
“I was excited and loved the importance of safety and how that triumphed everything,” Isaiah said.
That focus on safety has continued to stand out to him. Each morning at the Orlando hub begins with a Toolbox Talk, where the team discusses safety issues and situations that can affect employees at work, at home, and on the road. From there, the team sorts cylinders to keep the yard organized and efficient before drivers load their trucks and begin making customer deliveries.
For Isaiah, being a Package Driver is about much more than getting an order from point A to point B. He takes pride in being professional, providing excellent customer service, and representing the Nippon Sanso Matheson brand with every customer interaction.
One Toolbox Talk in particular demonstrated just how important that responsibility can be. After Isaiah’s manager, Jack, reminded the team never to move a cylinder by grabbing it by the cap, Isaiah later saw a customer attempting to do exactly that. Remembering the safety lesson, Isaiah immediately stepped in and explained the proper way to handle the cylinder, sharing Jack’s lesson about how unsafe it is to move a cylinder by its cap. The customer appreciated that Isaiah had their safety in mind, going beyond just deliveries.
Isaiah has also had opportunities to take on important assignments. One of his most memorable was an overnight delivery to a large customer, where he worked alongside a teammate from Lake City, the driver who originally trained him. The job required two drivers and two tube trailers of helium to fill a large balloon. Isaiah was honored that his manager trusted him with such an important delivery, and today he continues to take pride in serving multiple high-volume customers.
“I love that I do not feel stressed or micromanaged,” he said. “I am able to focus on my job and duty at hand with no distractions.”
The company’s Right to Refusal policy is another part of the culture that resonates with Isaiah. He appreciates that employees are empowered to stop and refuse a task if something doesn’t feel right, because no delivery, deadline, or task is worth risking an injury.
His advice to new employees reflects that same philosophy: stay safe, follow the rules, and don’t rush. “Take your time. This is not a race,” Isaiah said. “You will get everything with repetition.”
Outside of work, Isaiah keeps moving, too. He enjoys walking and running and aims to reach 30 miles each month. His personal record is 49 miles in a single month. He also enjoys attending car shows whenever he gets the chance.
Whether he’s making a customer delivery, helping a coworker, or sharing an important safety lesson, Isaiah approaches his work with the same principle: keep safety at the forefront, stay focused, and be willing to help others along the way.
